About us
What is the BMEA?
The British Marine Electronics Association is a trade organisation that represents installers and manufacturers of electrical and electronic equipment such as radars, GPS receivers, radios, navigation aids and battery chargers specifically for marine use. The BMEA is a group association of the British Marine Federation (BMF).
What does the BMEA do?
There are many aspects to the work of the Association. Representing the interests of members and promoting high standards of professionalism in terms of products, services and workmanship are key objectives. In tangible terms, the Association produces a Code of Practice for installation of equipment, is responsible for the BMET skills accreditation scheme and delivers technical services, including advice and guidance, to the industry and consumers.
The BMEA hold an annual conference for its members that features some of the very best speakers from inside and outside the industry. Also held at the conference are the BMEA awards for ‘Best Product of the Year’ and ‘Waterfront Dealer of the Year’.
About the Code of Practice
The Code of Practice for Electrical and Electronic Installations in Small Craft is produced by the Association as a guide to how installations should meet the Standards required for compliance with the Recreational Craft Directive (RCD). It is based on the ISO Standards for AC & DC installations. The Code of Practice is available to all including trade and DIY installers alike and can be obtained through the BMF technical department (phone 01784 223634 or email: cabel@britishmarine.co.uk)
About the BMET scheme
British Marine Electronics Technician accreditation is a new scheme that has been introduced to recognise the qualifications and experience of those involved with the installation of electronic and electrical equipment in boats. The scheme consists of intermediate and advanced level examinations and, verification of a candidate’s practical competence. By choosing a company with staff that have attained BMET accreditation you can be confident that you will get the highest standards of workmanship and expertise.
Why should I use BMEA members?
Some manufacturers offer an extended warranty when installations are carried out by their appointed agents. You may think it better to try and find the lowest price and this is fine for some basic products. For other, more complex products and installation, you really do need it properly installed and even more so when products are interfaced to other equipment, ‘talking’ to each other in the electronic sense. Also, be aware that some imported equipment may not meet UK and European standards. Such equipment may be illegal if fitted to your boat. The list of BMEA members can be used to locate your nearest BMEA dealer and, your assurance that work will be of the highest quality, at a competitive price and with uncompromising service.
Want to know more?
There is a lot more to the Association and many ways it’s activities might be of benefit to you. Currently, the Association’s website provides basic information including a searchable directory of members and a product supplier database. Investment in enhanced services and more detailed information will benefit this facility during the early part of 2007. You can obtain contact information from the website so that you can forward queries about the Association or matters relative to your electrical and electronic installations.www.bmea.org
