The MCA has reported a huge growth in the UK beacon registry this month. 40,000 emergency distress beacons are currently registered in the UK. In the Western world, nautical charts date back to before the 1600s. It is thought that the Danes were the first to undertake formal nautical charting, ordering a complete survey of the country’s 500 islands and 7,000 km long coastline, and appointing a Director of Nautical Charts as early as 1689.
