Icom afloat with anglers
Icom is supporting AnglersAfloat in their quest to bring the up and coming sport of kayak fishing to the UK. Already hugely popular in the US this sport is gathering fans across the UK and the rest of Europe.
David Morris, founder of AnglersAfloat, first fished from a kayak in August 2003. He enjoyed it so much he launched the internet based kayak fishing resource for Europe. With help from the kayak and marine industry, David has been able to produce the popular Kayak Projects and various how-to-guides.
A major concern at AnglersAfloat is promoting personal safety, which is why they strongly recommend kayakers always wear a PFD (Personal Flotation Device) with a waterproof VHF handheld radio. David said, “our equipment is tested to the extreme, being so close to the water. That is why we suggest that kayaking fisherman should get a VHF that can cope with these conditions. We recommend Icom’s IC-M33 to our visitors on AnglersAfloat as it floats should you happen to drop it overboard!

Rouen 24 hour race results
The world famous 24 hour endurance race was plagued by wet and windy weather with waves in excess of 3 feet making Rouen 2007 reportedly one of the roughest races ever. Sixteen of the 45 entries sunk, capsized or received some damage within the first 2 hours.
The UK team compromising of Jan Falkowski, John Puddifoot, Dave Field and John Masters achieved a very strong 14th place in their class, a fantastic result for their debut race.
John Puddifoot said “To finish the race was a feat of some considerable achievement particularly as both boats were part of the brand new RYA SL90 circuit development project. We finished just outside the top ten in class and were delighted with the result”.
He went on to say, “Throughout the race the Icom communications systems worked faultlessly and proved to be particularly valuable during the difficult moments in the race. Our team managers were immediately able to communicate with the drivers following the incidents and to confirm that they were OK and also to establish the nature of the damage to the boats so that our repair teams could be ready to start work immediately the boats arrived back in the pits”.
He went on to say “The RYA would like to thank Icom for their valuable support in this project and it is our intention to take the boats to Poland in July for the second round of the World endurance championships”.

Garmin launches national fishing competition
The inaugural Garmin National Charterboat Fishing competition is to take place over three days, on the 27, 28 and 29th July, in Plymouth. The aim is to attract enthusiasts from all over the country and encourage families to enter the competition as an activity they can enjoy together. The competition is open to anyone over the age of 15.
Event Organiser, Malcolm Jones, is hoping to revitalise the port of Plymouth’s affinity with the sport. “Plymouth was the UK port for wreck and reef fishing in the 70’s and is the ideal home for the Garmin National Fishing Competition. We’re expecting a fantastic turnout for this year’s event and there is a mood amongst the local charter skippers to try and revitalise Plymouth and put it back on the map in the world of fishing.”
The calibre and reputation of the competition has also been endorsed by Garmin’s commitment to sponsor the event. “We needed an international affiliated sponsor to support the event and were elated when Garmin stepped forward.”
Garmin’s UK Marine specialist, Richard Thoroughgood, is looking forward to the competition. “It’s magnificent that the Garmin National Fishing Competition has evolved from such a natural home as Plymouth. As a leading provider of state-of-the-art marine products we are delighted to be supporting the event. Entrants using Garmin’s innovative technology will be in a strong position from the outset, then it’s down to individual skill and judgement for the title of National Champion.”
It is now hoped that this national competition will be embraced by the cream of the amateurs in the UK, perhaps spurred on by the chance to get a place in the record books. With recording and photographic facilities there is definitely an opportunity for record-breaking catches!
The entrance fee is £160 for all three days.
The total value of the prizes and cash is over £4000. The first prize is £1000 plus a cup. The second prize is a Garmin nüvi 670 satellite navigation system worth £370; third prize is a Garmin nüvi 310 worth £250 and fourth prize is a Garmin GPS 72 handheld. There will also be prizes for best specimen and best species.
The Garmin National Fishing competition will also embrace a chosen charity as the benefactor of this year’s fundraising activities. All profits raised will be donated to the children’s cancer charity, CLIC Sargent. It offers help and support to families caring for sick youngsters, during and after treatment.
Entry forms can be obtained from the organiser by phoning 07977 097690 or by email from malcjones@blueyonder.co.uk
