Tacktick wins Queen’s Award for Innovation for its wireless, solar powered marine electronics
Started by two young brothers ten years ago, Tacktick remains the only company in the world to have designed and manufactured a range of wireless, solar powered marine electronics called Micronet. Used by top sailors across the globe from Olympic sailing teams to Ocean racing yachts as well as thousands of cruising yachtsmen, Tacktick’s wireless electronics offer unique advantages over traditional wired electronics. With 80% of marine electronics failures caused by wires and connections, Tacktick’s electronics offer massively increased reliability as well as simple installation, with no wires to run through decks and up masts.
Clive Johnson, Joint Managing Director is delighted that Tacktick has been honoured with this award; “Tacktick strives for innovation, reliability and flexibility; this award is a fantastic acknowledgement of the efforts of the whole team who have worked so hard to make our products a success. Launching such an innovative product in the face of massive global marine electronics competitors has been a huge challenge but Tacktick has created a unique and valuable brand and remains the leader in wireless electronics for the marine industry.”
Tacktick won The Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category for Micornet, a range of instruments for all types of boats up to 60ft. The secret of Tacktick’s success and lead in the wireless revolution is down to its roots in the dinghy market and the 10 years spent developing expertise in solar powered technology combined with low powered electronics. Besides giving reliability and performance, Tacktick displays also benefit from being self-powered, lightweight (crucial for speed and performance), impressively portable (for data information where you need it) and totally waterproof to 10m (essential for the rugged marine environment).
To complement the success of being honoured with the Queens Award for Innovation, Tacktick have launched a host of new products already in 2007 including their new Race Master wireless compass, speed and depth instrument for sports and keel boats, a new wireless Power Boat Wind instrument for motor boat owners and a wireless Remote Display with full interface ability to all the main brands of marine electronics. And there’s more to come in the next few months with the eagerly awaited launch of their new Maxi range for large racing yachts.

Fire Service team finishes Round Ireland Challenge
The Bedford and Luton Fire Service team have recently completed their gruelling charity challenge of circumnavigating Ireland in a Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB). Stopping at every coastal Fire Authority along the way the challenge took the team 17 days to complete. Raising over £2000 for the Keech Cottage Children’s Hospice and the Fire Service Benevolent Fund.
Phil Sutton Watch Commander for the Bedford and Luton Fire and Rescue Service said, “The radios Icom donated worked faultlessly throughout the challenge. The IC-M71 even survived a dunk in the sea when I jumped in, shame my phone didn’t cope so well!”
He went on to say, “The task would’ve so much harder without the reliable comms that Icom provided. We used the radios every day to speak with the Coastguard, to get weather reports and to communicate with Marinas and ports. Thanks Icom UK for these great radios”
